Mogens moved to Colorado from Denmark in 1980. He began learning the painting trade from his father as a kid, sailed as a merchant marine to see parts of the world, got a degree as a social worker, fell in love with an American, and moved to the U.S. in 1980 where he eventually began his own paint contracting business.
Sheila graduated from high school in Evergreen, began working on painting crews at 16, and, while attending college, started the Jorgensen and Moran Painting business (Moran being her maiden name) with Mogens in 1983. She studied solar design, project management, architecture, and design. She received her Interior Design degree in 1990 from the Colorado Institute of Art.
